Festival of the Fleeces

Every June long weekend Merriwa comes alive with market stalls, street entertainers, rides, exhibits, competitions demonstrations and the grand parade – which is headed-up by the famous Running of the Sheep in their red socks. This is a fun-packed family event that is not to be missed.

For more than thirty years the festival has honoured the great wool tradition of the region and showcased “life on the land”.

The event focusses on community, family and the rich agricultural history of the region. From its humble beginnings, the festival now attracts in excess of 6,000 visitors who are treated to traditional country hospitality

Aberdeen Highland Games

The Games begin with a parade of bands, clan representatives and others that leads into the Massed Band Salute and Chieftain’s Address that officially opens the day. Throughout the day there will be fun for all the family – there will be Highland and Country Dancing, Pipe Band displays, Strong Man events with the Kilted Warriors to enjoy as well as three-legged races, and the famed Kilted Dash to participate in. A multitude of stores and stands will surround the area selling all manner of Scottish heirlooms and souvenirs, clothing and garb, and food and drink to complete your day.

King of the Ranges

It all began in 2001 when Upper Hunter stockmen competed in the Man from Snowy River Stockman’s Challenge in Corryong Victoria. Enthused by the concept, volunteers formed the King of the Ranges Stockman’s Challenge with a mission to preserve and bring to public attention the traditional skills of Australian stockmanship and bushcraft.

The inaugural event was held in 2004 in the historic Upper Hunter township of Murrurundi and where in 2024, King of the Ranges will celebrate 20 years of heritage Stockman’s Challenges.

Scone Horse Festival

The historic town of Scone is well known as the ‘Horse Capital of Australia’. The Warburton Estate Agents Scone Horse Festival was established in 1980 paying homage to all breeds of horses, including Thoroughbreds, Australian Stock horses and draught horses, as well as the men and women who breed and work with them. Celebrated by large crowds to attend the two-day Scone Cup Race Carnival, attracting over 10,000 visitors each year.

Warbirds Over Scone

2024 will mark 40 years since Australia’s first air show celebrating warbirds. Way back in 1983, Aussie aviation legend and Hall of Fame member Col Pay of Vintage Fighter Restorations put on an event here at Scone Airport. Warbirds Over Scone 2024 will continue the tradition of celebrating the achievements and beauty of the flying machines of WWII like the Spitfire, Mustang and Kittyhawk.
